Only 3 variables a, b and c with whole numbers are used. (Good resource for plenary/ consolidation of substitution. Could be used for high ability year 6 through to low ability year 11.) A literacy boost in maths lessons! 80 common maths words, split in to 4 groups of 20. 2 lists per A4 sheet. Print out, photocopy, get pupils to stick them in their maths books or planners and test them weekly on these words. (Weeks 1 to 4, 20 words from each weekly list, then week 5 could be any 20 words from the whole list). Objective: Improve the spelling of frequently used maths words. (Also, to reinforce the definitions of the words when doing the spelling test). Aimed at: years 7 to 11, all ability groups. May be suitable for some high ability year 6 classes.

FOUR different maths bingo games suitable for years 7 to 11 all abilities. I have never met a class who don’t like doing these Bingo games. This resource is designed to be a fun activity (10 - 15 mins each game) for KS3 and KS4 pupils. Students choose any 9 numbers between 1 and 20 and write them in a 3 x 3 grid. Each bingo game has 20 questions (with answers) and students cross off the number from their bingo grid if they have it. The first pupil to get all 9 numbers shouts ‘Bingo’ (and could win a prize?). Teachers can pick different students to answer the questions and then pass on to the whole class if the student cannot get the correct answer. Topics covered: short BIDMAS questions, squared numbers, square roots, cube numbers, Roman numerals and some general knowledge questions including history, geography and French. Once coloured in, this activity is great for making a classroom wall display. I have used this in years 7,8 and 9 they all enjoyed it, just allow more time for the younger ones to finish. This is the third bundle of 10 tests suitable for higher ability classes in KS3 and KS4. Each download has 10 tests, each with 20 questions and is followed by a complete set of answers. All the tests are designed to be non-calculator. I usually allow 7 minutes to 9 minutes depending on the classes ability. I would suggest start at 7 minutes then add 1 or 2 minutes if needed. The tests gradually increase in challenge and topics are interleaved to reinforce key skills/ methods needed for the higher maths GCSEs. L/O: To plot and then comment on transformations of a function. Worksheet activity where students type in basic function f(x)=x squared into Desmos or GeoGebra and then do various transformations of this function. Students plot and draw what happens on the graphs and make a comment about what they find. Comment sections are scaffolded to guide pupils in describing the transformation. The worksheet is 4 sides of A4, with a gradual increase in difficulty. I have used this with high ability year 7 and 8 classes, plus high and middle ability year 9, 10 and 11 classes. Transforming function graphs (translations and reflections of non-trigonometric graphs) is grade 7 on the new GCSE 9-1 scale. As an unprotected Word document you can edit it as required.

This is a free sample of a “Quick 20” maths test for higher ability pupils. I have uploaded bundles of tests: 1 -10, 11 - 20 and 21 - 30. The tests are designed to be non-calculator, have a variety of topics, and a slight graduation in level of challenge as the tests progess. Usually the higher series of tests would suit the higher ability maths classes in years 9, 10 and 11 or any classes that need a bit of challenge. Tests typically take 7 to 8 minutes to complete but increase time accordingly for later tests to about 9 to 10 minutes. I have also uploaded Quick 20 foundation level maths tests and other rsources.
