This is a 4 week writing unit based on the book ‘Izzy Gizmo’ which is a lovely book covering cultural and family diversity as well as pushing the message about perseverance. It begins with a hook to grab the children’s attention. The skills focused on throughout the unit are: commas in a list expanded noun phrases adverbs conjunctions. The skills are taught as stand alone lessons before applying them to short writes. There is a level of scaffold planned for in most of the lessons and there is lots of recall of the skills taught during the unit to help make them stick! There is plenty of writing opportunities in the unit where the focus is applying the skills learned. The writing focuses are all narrative genres which the children will be familiar with therefore more cognitive space will be freed to focus on the skills. This builds up to a big write at the end of the unit, where a shorten version of the story is ready to use when creating a story map. The story map element allows the children to have plenty of oral practice before writing. Resources are also provided to make this a complete unit that you can pick up and teach from.
