The pack contains two 1.5 houre lessons that have been designed as an introduction to GCSE English but can be easily adapted to teach reading and writing skills at any time throughout the academic year. The following resources are included: A PowerPoint containing ice breakers as well as an overview of the course. There is a jargon-busting clear explanation of AO1. It has been designed specifically for the AQA GCSE English Language Paper 2 and can work with any text from any past paper. You can of course add specific points relevant to the text you use for the exam. The PowerPoint is accompanied by a self-assessment and target setting sheet which will help your learners set goals for themselves to enable them to perform better in this component of the exam. A complete lesson on AQA Paper 2 quesion 2. It includes a PowerPoint and comparison sheets in the style of Venn diagrams, one of which is editable and can be filled in with your students in class. You could get one of them to do the typing in order to make the lesson more interactive. Ideas on how these can be used in different ways included in the PowerPoint. AQA Sams 4 insert and mark scheme needed- links have been included in the PowerPoint. Instructions on how the mark scheme should be used have been included in the PowerPoint.

A complete lesson with a PowerPoint and picture prompts: one with boxes drawn on in order to encourage students to zoom in on different aspects of the picture. Also included is a detailed worksheet with explanations and examples of descriptive and creative writing techniques and a bank of words and phrases that learners can use to make their writing interesting. The editable resource also contains an original story that can be used in two ways: learners can be asked to analyse the story, take inspiration from it and to also suggest improvements. Alternatively, it can be given out without the last two paragraphs and learners can be asked to write an ending.

This resource has been designed with GCSE English language in mind, but can be easily adapted to teach creative writing for key stage 3, or 5. Students can also use this resource when working independently. The only change would be to the peer-assessment activity, which can either be skipped or completed as an additional self-assessment task.

The lesson includes a PowerPoint that guides you through the teaching of two lessons based on the selected extract. Starters and plenaries have been incorporated within the worksheet provided and the PowerPoint. The PowerPoint also contains a link to two websites, one where you can find the extract needed, and the other for the revision of subject terminology. There is also a complete overview of the reading section of the paper. With minor tweaks the lessons can be adapted to teach the skills needed for any exam board.
