Discussion Texts LKS2 Creating Interest

(0)
Aimed at year 3/4, a useful editable first lesson resource to create interest in balanced argument texts. Lots of opportunity for class discussion. Children initially asked to rank animals in terms of which they think would the best pet to least favourite choice giving reasons. They are then introduced to for and against. Discussion really important to develop their thinking. It’s their thinking that matters not relying on factual knowledge. Differentiated so higher abilities could give 2 reasons, stretching that to two very different reasons whereas lower abilities just give the one.

Story planning for a Norse Myth

(2)
Differentiated 2 ways to guide children through a plan for a Norse myth about Thor and Loki. Children requiring more support have been given prompts to help guide them through their descriptions and ideas. The plan is sequenced in paragraph headings to help focus on that skill so would be helpful if prior learning on when a new paragraph is needed is done as part of the process. I have done this with year 4 but could work at other age ranges

A resource mainly aimed at year 5 and 6 but can be used with year 4. Children think more deeply about how the poet uses personification and the meaning behind it. Good for those teachers working on comprehension questions which ask the student to explain the author's choice of words.

Conjunctions self assessment KS2

Use after an extended piece of writing if your focus is on conjunctions. This resource is differentiated to look at a range of conjunctions being used in the student's writing. Simple to use and a 5 minutes assessment, children are able to see for themselves which conjunctions they overuse and which ones they need to include. After doing this, an up levelling activity could be to write a sentence with one of the ones they didn't use.
