This pack includes an 8-page PowerPoint, and printable worksheet for leanrers to draw directly onto using Charcoal. The PowerPoint is a visual teaching aid ideal for a one-off tool drawing lesson, or a starting point for this as a theme, alternatively an ideal starting point for a focus on the artist Jim Dine, or a unit on tonal drawing using different media. The tasks are designed for students who have not used Charcoal before and explore basic mark making and creating tonal values. The PowerPoint will stimulate conversation and opinions, this leads onto useful tips for how to successfully use Charcoal including a list of materials required, then two short warm up tasks to help learners with using this new material before attempting to draw from tools using Charcoal. This is a warm up task, and the ‘tool drawing’ exercise is left for teachers to add after the warm up dependent on the ability of your learners and equipment available to draw from.

A 9-page PowerPoint to introduce learners to the artist Helen Wells. The slides include a selection of imagery and quotes by the artist, discussion points, and a breakdown of how to ‘Build an image’; a great starting point for several lessons of directed experimentation. A mark making warm-up task is included with a hyperlink (in notes section) directing teachers to the artist’s own photography should learners not have their own. This project would work well alongside a photography unit, encouraging expressive drawing from primary images, and offers the opportunity to develop skills in creating Colour Gradients using watercolour paints.

This resource was a mini project I developed to underpin learner understanding of the AQA Art, Craft and Design Assessment Objectives, focusing on working independently in response to an example exam question. The mini project is open to development, I used it over a 4 week period as a compact example of how to respond quickly and efficiently to Assesment Objectives One (Develop ideas through investigations, demonstrating critical understanding of sources) and Three (Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions as work progresses). The project includes an 8 slide PowerPoint to introduce the Mini Project and explain expectations. an assessment/feedback grid to provide learners with focused feedback pertinent to the AQA assessment criteria a learner handout, outlining the example exam question and three clear tasks. Teachers may wish to extend this project or use to introduce at Key Stage Three for more able groups.

A five page PowerPoint designed to develop learner’s understanding of the formal elements in a piece of Abstract art by Wassily Kadinsky. The document includes: a reference to an Art Term - conversation starter a one minute warm up task a written task for learners to complete links to the formal elements of art and design Art Analysis question templates to help learners structure their response and encourage them to look in detail.

A simple hand out sheet to support a Zentangle drawing task, lesson or homework task. The sheet includes an example of a Zentangle Drawing, along with a conversation starter and historical reference to vintage Singer Sewing Machine Embroidery art, therefore offering links to Textiles as well.

A 15 page Powerpoint visual aid to help keystage 3 or 4 learners draw links between contemporary photographer Bobby Doherty and the Formal Elements. The document serves to encourage questioning and debate surrounding the imagery used, this then develops into a differentiated drawing task.

A 10 page PowerPoint introducing abstract artist Piet Mondarin, including fun facts and a short YouTube video to support. Learners are then tasked with creating a 3D Mondarin inspired cube using the template provided on the slides. This is fun task that will encourage opportunities for questioning and sharing opinions, suitable for key stage 3 learners.

A simple 6 slide PowerPoint document inlcuding a simple 3 stage Watercolour Gradients task. Two differentiated Shell template images are also attached for learners to work directly onto in watercolour (please note it is advantageous to print these templates on watercolour paper or high quality cartridge paper for best results). The Powerpoint includes a step by step guide to support blending colours to build tone, and keywords to stimulate conversation and questioning.

A simplified resource for Key Stage 3 to introduce three dimensional drawing and applying tone through colour. This 13 page PowerPoint document includes a resources list, step by step how to (including a hyperlink to YouTube video should teachers or learners prefer), and an extension task to stretch and challenge. This task is a perfect warm up task for a mixed ability group, cover lesson or homework activity. The tasks only require basic equipment.
