Year 5 based whole lesson task: children receive a letter explaining how to complete the task and there is a presentation to go alongside this. Children must choose animals based on their budget and choose food stalls and ‘extras’ such as toilets, trains etc. Children then draw their petting farm based on the area and perimeters that have been given - ensuring that they all fit in their petting farm! Based on the ideas around Rollercoaster Tycoon. Should cover addition and subtraction objectives, as well as area and perimeter and other measurement objectives.

Presentation used to support the lesson. Children work in pairs and read the letter to receive a brief of what to create in the Jurassic Park. Then using area and perimeter clues, children must structure their Jurassic Park by drawing the theme park - making sure everything can fit that they have bought. Uses logic skills, problem solving and reasoning and measurement. Extension activity idea included.

Presentation used to lead the lesson, it includes 'text messages' from a zookeeper who is struggling to run his zoo. He needs help to arrange the animals, so the children need to plan on A3 paper where the animals are going to go, by cracking the area and perimeter codes and draw them to scale. Then some animals escape and the fence must be rebuilt - children have to work out the cost. Then the times for the animals feeding has gotten mixed up, so the children must work out when the animals are being fed and in what order. Uses knoweldge of area and perimeter, measurement in length and times. Answers are included.

Children work in pairs; give them the letter to look at the requirements for designing a theme park. Children pick which rollercoasters they are going to use, then which foodstalls. This is using their budget of £20,000. Then on A3 paper, they use area and perimeter problem solving and reasoning to draw the theme park to scale. Extension: to create a timetable for a Year 5 class to come to the theme park. Uses: problem solving and reasoning, working with money, column addition and subtraction, area and perimeter, height and weight measurements.
