This unit explores the art of Jean-Michael Basquiat while looking at elements of art such as colour, line and composition as well as experimenting expression and abstraction by focusing on Basquiat’s use of automatic drawing to music, writing about books, language and events the he was influenced by and making non-realistic portraits of famous icons and his friends. This unit allows students to explore expressive art with the freedom to embrace inaccuracies as the artist did while also celebrating Black modern history. It includes sheet dedicated to self, peer and teacher assessment too.

A great get to know you activity for the first few days of the school term, adaptable across all year groups. Teachers can create calculations related to themselves and match it to the numeracy areas already covered by the students. Print off the blank copy to give the students a chance to make their own version for their partner to complete. This makes for a lovely lesson or starter which gives a quick and fun baseline assessment while allowing everyone to get to know each other a bit better too.
