An introduction to the Vikings- Year 4

***POWRPOINT, PRINTABLES, ACTIVITIES, LESSON PLAN and DIFFERENTIATED TASKS*** This resource has been a gem to start off our topic on the Vikings. Children begin this topic by coming up with a bank of questions that they want to know about the Vikings. This stimulates the children's interest within the upcoming topic and gets their creative juices flowing. This activity is then followed by asking children to discuss what they think a Viking looks like from what they've heard. The powerpoint can be used as a support to give children a basic insight into the Vikings and where they came from. Next, children are instructed to sort (in groups of 4) 10 statements into piles of true or false. This allows some group discussion and 'talk for understanding' to take place. (I always love to hear children's take on the Vikings). Finally, children are then introduced to how a longship looks in an interactive/game-like manner. It requires them to "sneak up" on a Viking and spy on their ship, then report back to their friends on what they look like. It's lots of fun and a great way to spark interest in a new topic.
