For the IB Literature Paper 2 exam, a candidate’s introductory paragraph (their thesis statement) is crucial in clarifying for the examiner how they have interpreted, and intend to answer, the question. These three planning tables and one model paragraph use The Great Gatsby and 1984.

This is a scaffold script for the IB Literature Individual Oral Assessment. I created it and have refined it through use with my students. The weakest students can achieve a Level 4 using this structure, even if what they say isn’t brilliantly analytical. The same structure has also enabled many of my stronger students to achieve Level 7 outcomes. Top tip for them: add in multiple pieces of textual evidence in each ‘technique & analysis’ statement.
