Two Powerpoints that start with function machines and their link to solving equations. Then bridging to solving equations with the balance method. Substitution is also linked to function machines and practiced. I have used this very successfully with all year groups (Year 7-11) to introduce solving equations or give a more conceptual understanding.

This is a Powerpoint that guides students through finding the nth term of sequences - starting with pictures. Students are intuitively able to link term numbers with nth term. I have had great success teaching this to all ability Year 7 students all the way to Year 10 students. Included is a full lesson powerpoint and worksheet for the students to complete.
