I made this resource for a top set first year class but it is suitable for any year. I was struggling to keep them on task with textbook work so I decided to make this activity. This works best in a relay fashion in groups of 4 and focuses on percentages as well as rounding. I printed out the powerpoint and gave the groups one 'aisle' at a time. Each isle has 8 items for the students to work out the percentage increase or decrease. They can use any method they want, i.e use a multiplier or type it into the calculator. It could also be adapted for non-calculator. Once an aisle is completed and all students have the work in their jotters they move onto a new aisle and harder questions. The team who fixes the supermarket and answers all the questions wins. Any improvements you think could be made please let me know. Also let me know how your class got on with it :) Eamonn

Presentation on simple and compound interest with worked examples.

This is an active and IDL lesson used to help draw and measure angles using a protractor. Each student is given a picture of Kandinsky's painting. (This is on the PPT) As a class we go through an analyse the painting of where you could possibly locate the different type of angles. Beforehand there is a brief revision of types of angles, triangles and drawing triangles and circles. Students use their protractor to find the angles in all vertically opposite lines, triangles and then quadrilaterals. There is then an extension at the end for students to make their own Kandinsky inspired painting using their measuring and drawing skills. This was used as a Friday afternoon period which then became a wall display. Any recommendations are appreciated. Let me know how you got on.

A few lessons on integers. Presentation involves everything you need to know for adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing integers. First activity involves difference in temperature using star wars planets. Next activity involves difference in bank balances using Star wars. Third activity was a treasure hunt with a few examples from above. Enjoy

Lesson using the map of Springfield to help students get used to working with a scale. I used 1cm=2km. This was for a very low ability class, so could be improved to cater for higher ability lessons.

It’s here, and it is fatter than ever. Have a look at my Christmas Quiz for 2021. Standard format for a quiz, groups of 4 or so and I normally blast through 2 rounds at a time before answers. The answer sheet , joke round and picture round are all found on the PDF. Simply print it out on A4, back and front, and give it to each group. The joke round for the kids is usually a laugh hearing their rubbish jokes. Finally, to keep it competitive, I like to organise two prizes. One prize for the overall winners of the quiz, but then a slightly bigger Bonus prize that pupils can still be excited about. Once the final places of the quiz are announced, I then play a game of Play your cards right (Higher or Lower). To win the “Big Prize” teams have to get 5 cards in a row correct. The team that wins the quiz goes first, followed by second etc until there is a winner. If no winner, the team that won the quiz win both prizes. Quick presentation to introduce collecting like terms with a middle set first year class. Activity at end involving collecting boxes proved quite fun and challenging for students.

Little bit of everything to do with fractions, great as a revision game. I only made 4 cards as this was used as a revision class with only 3 students. However, one could choose any 9 numbers and place in a grid like normal bingo games on Tes.

This is a lesson which could definitely be improved on however has the basis of a very good and challenging cross curricular exercise. Mixing art and maths enables students to learn about lines, angles, shapes and more with the abstract art from Kandinsky. Anyone is more than welcome to comment how to structure this lesson a little more.

A game designed by dannytheref which I modified slightly to suit my top third year class to revise Surds and Indices. Differentiated from green to red. I usually asked a general knowledge question for groups to get control of the board. I used fake gold coins and ran the lesson over a week to see which team was the best, green=2, orange=3, red =4. Presentation with a bit of fun. Using angry birds as a way to show how brackets can be expanded turned out to be very useful. Students enjoyed the presentation. Questions followed are of ability for middle-top set first years, but can be made suitable for any age/ year group.
