National Poetry Day Wonder poetry lesson for Years 3 & 4. KS2 poetry writing resources, PowerPoint, picture prompts, worksheets and Writer’s Toolkit. Celebrate National Poetry Day with this engaging Wonder-themed poetry writing lesson for Year 3 and Year 4. This ready-to-use KS2 English resource encourages children to look closely at ordinary things, use their imagination and transform their observations into creative poetry. Children become “poetry detectives”, exploring photographs of familiar objects and considering what makes them extraordinary. Through discussion, modelling and shared writing, pupils investigate interesting adjectives, powerful verbs, similes, personification, alliteration, sound and imaginative imagery before writing their own six-line Wonder Poem. Using the repeated structure “I wonder at…”, children select from two sets of inspiring photographic prompts and develop each observation into an imaginative poetic line. Model examples demonstrate how simple observations can be transformed into effective imagery, such as a spider’s web “sparkling like a necklace of raindrops” or a puddle “holding the whole sky in its water.” The lesson concludes with a “My Best Line” plenary, in which pupils reread their poem, identify their most successful line and explain how a particular word, phrase or poetic technique creates an effect on the reader. The planning provides differentiated expectations for Year 3 and Year 4, together with support and challenge suggestions. The resource pack includes: an 11-slide teaching PowerPoint; detailed lesson planning with National Curriculum learning objective and Y3/Y4 assessment criteria; two sets of photographic poetry stimuli; two photo-collage writing sheets; a printable Writer’s Toolkit; pupil task/reference sheets; model “I wonder at…” sentences; independent writing guidance; and a self-evaluation/plenary activity. This would work particularly well as a National Poetry Day lesson, KS2 poetry lesson, creative writing lesson, poetry unit activity, English lesson, classroom writing display activity or standalone Year 3/Year 4 writing lesson.
