A short scheme of work on debating, produced for Key Stage 3 students. Lessons focus on what debate is and why it occurs, rhetorical strategies for arguing and persuading, debate structure and debate delivery. Also included are motions for debate, as well as arguments that might be used to respond to these motions.

These lessons and resources give students an opportunity to work on the skills needed for this section of the AQA English Language exam. A series of activities to prepare students for Questions 5 and 6 (shorter and longer writing tasks) of AQA's Higher Language paper. This gives students steps to approaching questions and planning their responses. Sample questions, answers and mark schemes are included.

This mini-unit of work provides an introduction to literary and film genres. Ideal for Year 7 groups in giving them a grounding in different types of text, this may be used as a refresher for other year groups.

A short unit of work in which students watch Romeo and Juliet before looking closely at the text. The second part of the scheme of work has students thinking carefully about how they write analytically about Shakespeare and develops their essay writing skills. Created for a Year 7 class, these lessons have students investigating a text-based TV/online advert for Fairtrade, looking at persuasive linguistic techniques. Students then have the opportunity to respond to an advertising brief, creating their own advert which employs these devices. These lessons also give students the chance to practise using analytical language for English (analytical verbs, modal verbs and modifiers). See notes for instructions.

These lessons use stories by South Asian writers, including Jhumpa Lahiri, and focus on story openings, having students explore how they hook a reader, drawing them into the world of the story, and then on how sentence openings can be used to provide variation, fluency, cohesion and effect in writing. Students then have an opportunity to write creatively using the writing skills and knowledge of short stories gained during this unit so far. Used for Year 9; could be adapted for other years.

Lesson PowerPoints to aid the teaching of Chimamanda Adichie's 'Purple Hibiscus'. See notes underneath slides for instructions. These lessons are being used for a top set GCSE English class who sat AQA's Literature 'Unit 1: Exploring modern texts' exam. These presentations contain a range of lesson activities and reading and writing tasks which may be of use.

This paragraph writing toolkit allows teachers to help students construct analytical paragraphs for essays or exam questions. In the blank spaces provided on the slides, teachers can model parts of a paragraph or provide key words and sentence starters. This is a useful tool to make analytical or essay writing less daunting for students.

A media scheme of work for Key Stage 3 English which examines the role of celebrities in the media, focusing on advertising in particular. The final week of the scheme has students looking at different kinds of journalism and creating a celebrity newspaper interview. As well as including several creative tasks, this unit gives students various opportunities to work on their analytical writing skills.
