A snakes and ladders game for writing. Students work in groups of 2 - 4 and take turns rolling the dice. Each square they land on provides a specific prompt to write. This resource is easily adaptable and comes with a rule set.

This is a fully resourced lesson that gets secondary students to think about Inner Monologue in narrative writing. This lesson has the students each pretend to be a character, given to them by card. They work in groups of 6. Each takes a minute 'hot-seating' their character and, after everyone has had a go, they jumble up and lay out the cards and take turns guessing who was who. The students are pretending to be waiting in the hallway outside of a head teachers office - awaiting a meeting. Their personalities and character dictate what they think. Do they worry? Are they angry? Are they happy for the attention? Then the 'best of the best' from each group hot-seats a character in front of the entire class. Students then create their own character based on the same scenario - this sets them up for a period of extended writing doing an internal monologue based assessed on AQA criteria. A fun lesson that is ideal as a bit of a breather between heavier periods of writing - the lesson is aimed at getting students to think about Inner Monologue, a skill required to show control of writing. This lesson is used as part of a syllabus for Secondary English working towards the AQA language papers - though it is adaptable for other boards.
