This presentation offers a focus on the moral aspects of the job of a war photographer. It begins with a harrowing photograph by Kevin Carter of a starving child in Sudan due to the civil war. It does assume that students have studied both poems and focuses on Duffy’s poem with ‘Remains’ as the comparative poem. There is an exemplar Grade 9 essay attached and a planning worksheet for the students to plan their own response to the question - compare how poets present the ways people are affected by difficult experiences in ‘War Photographer’ and in one other poem from ‘Power and conflict’. This is a research activity aimed at low ability key stage 3. The aim is to research World War One poets and produce a fact file but there are other activities too. This is intended as a bridging activity to take us up to the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War and to create a display of the fact files. It would be handy to book into a computer room as there are recommended websites for their research included too. A final homework activity is for the students to research their own families and bring in photographs - they could even do their own presentations. The whole resource is easily adaptable.
