I have my lower school learning command words for homework. Command words are the words and phrases used in exams that tell students how they should answer a question. The command words are taken from Ofqual’s official list of command words and their meanings that are relevant to science. In addition, where necessary, AQA have included their own command words and their meanings to complement Ofqual’s list. This list includes 27 words. Command words marked * are new for teaching from 2016. To support this initiative I have created a set of activities : cross word, word search, word match up and multiple choice on show my homework .

Key words and meanings taken from the new AQA syllabus. These are given as homework prior to teaching the topics, so students have a clearer understanding of the jargon used. I do a quick quiz to check knowledge at the beginning of the topic. Included are sheets to take home as well as sheets with meanings only for students to fill in. There is also power points with the meanings and answers so students can quickly mark and correct answers.

I created this independent skills pack for year 8 to complete over the summer as a refresher and to help prepare them for year 9. It includes activities to practice skills such as reading, labelling, drawing, researching, experimenting, observing, recording, and pplying.
