KS1 KS2 50 Mental Arithmetic worksheet starters addition subtraction multiplication division

(0)
These 50 worksheets can be printed as a book or printed on a daily basis to provide a 10 minute registration or maths meeting activity. The 50 worksheets cover mental calculations using the four operations and numbers up to 10.They work to automate basic arithmetic so that children calculate much more quickly and easily. Working on mathematics involves utilizing short term or ‘working’ memory to store numbers and part solutions as you work through the problem. This means that making progress in maths is entirely dependent on how much working memory a child has at their disposal, and this can vary greatly from one person to the next. By learning the answers to the simplest calculations which form the basis of all problem solving, we can free up working memory space so that problems can be tackled more easily. These worksheets enable children to automate simple arithmetic so that more working memory is available for problem solving.

This is a workbook with one unit of work per page so can also be used as work cards or sheets. A set of 44 full colour cards, 11 each of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The first card in each set is straight linear equation questions. Once children have mastered the method, they tackle the remaining exercises in any order and apply their knowledge to different contexts. The cards apply the four operations to all the areas of mathematics covered in KS1 and lower KS2. Children practice the four operations in the context of: money, fractions, handling data, ratio, map reading/co-ordinates, shape, time, algebra and word problems. I print off all the cards and put them in a box so children take a card if they have finished their work or we have a set time when the children work on the cards independently. The cards can also be printed as the book ‘Mentor Me Maths’ and I have included the cover I tend to ask them to work on one topic -so do all the addition, subtraction, multiplication and division in the fraction set but they could be used for practising one particular operation or randomly.
