Tricky Word Actions (Jolly Phonics Sight Words)

(0)
Let's face it jolly phonics tricky words can be... well tricky! We have actions that go along with all 42 jolly phonics sounds. So why not for tricky words too? I decided to take matters into my own hands and began to add in actions for each of the 72 tricky words to help children remember them . (The children helped me to do this!) It was important that the actions didn't match any of their sound actions and that they were all different. This proved to be indeed very tricky as many of the words are similar E.G I, me and my. This resource has helped my class so much this year! Over time I removed the actions so the children identify the sight words without the help of the actions! It has made sight word learning a little more enjoyable as well! We also use a rainbow system to identify what tricky words the children know! When the children know all of the words in one rainbow arch we give them a matching coloured rain drop for their name cloud! (This can be seen pictured on the first slide.) This power point is very adaptable as you can create your own "custom slideshow" to suit the needs of your learners. E.G reorder slides or remove actions. Many of the actions are directly related to British Sign Language but some are a stimulus for remembering the word. The exact actions for the words can be interpreted in different ways. The pictures are more of a guide to enable you to tweak the actions to suit your children. E.G 'my' is a picture of Rainbow Dash from My Little Pony the children pretend to ride a horse saying 'my' like a horse would say nay. Tricky word 'your' is a picture of a boy giving a girl a present the children pretend to give a gift to their friend saying 'your' as in here is your present. I printed this slideshow of as a booklet for the children to practice at home too. I also filmed the children doing the actions and uploaded it to our Primary 1 Facebook page to avoid confusion of how to perform the actions. Everything we do in our Primary 1 is play based learning and it is important to remember that along with this direct teaching input we have lots of both undirected child centered experiential play and more structured play activities with adult support going on in our play room. Direct teaching is nessesary to get through the E&O's but remember play is learning!!!
