In The Sea There Are Crocodiles guided reading activities

(0)
This is a whole school literacy resource that could be adapted for an English SoW or for small group reading. The resources here were designed to be used in tutor period with Y9, so the pre-reading activities are aiming to be around 15-20 minutes each. They cover a range of topics about the big ideas of the story - being a refugee, seeking asylum, inequality and humanity. The guided reading power point has page references for the copy of the novel that we were reading but plenty of pause points to reflect on Einat’s journey. There are plenty of images to complement the unfamiliar language and places referenced in the book. I really hope you enjoy the resources and the book itself - it is a fantastic way of introducing KS3 to the real problems young people across the world face in their home countries. If you like the resources, please review!

KS3 subject specific spellings - Literacy activities for whole school

(0)
This resource was designed as a literacy activity to be completed in form times, but could easily be used as starter activity. There are seven subjects covered, so could be done over a half term. The objective of the activity is to work out what word the pictures represent, and then to accurately spell the word. After all the words are discovered, students should be able to guess the subject that links them. This could be differentiated by asking students to write or speak a full sentence that accurately uses two or more of the words in that subject.

KS3/4 literacy activities: grammar and word classifications for whole school

(0)
These were originally intended as literacy form time activities to cover aspects of grammar and word classifications, but could be used as stand alone activities in English lessons. There is a booklet contains a range of activities that correspond to the 2 power points and are designed for students to fill in as they progress through the course. There are some challenge tasks on some of the activities for differentiation. The power points have a 'light touch' in their style to make them a bit more engaging, but that is easily adapted if it is not to your or your students' tastes.

Writing about writing toolkit: KS3 sentence structures for exploring texts

(0)
This is a resource designed to help lower attaining students and EAL students start expressing and shaping their ideas with more sophistication. I’ve found it really useful to have on desks and ask students to use a sentence stem from a particular box to respond to a question or another student’s comment. It should help them with developing and building on basic ideas by offering alternative interpretations and looking closely at language and structure.

KS3 Y7 Literacy - Grammar/Writing Intervention through football

(0)
This is a booklet designed for a 7-9 week intervention course for Y7s with particularly weak writing and grammar skills. Everything is centred around football and I found this to be very engaging for the group of boys selected to be part of the programme. It covers several areas of writing such as capital letters and full stops, subject verb agreements, sentence types and variation and apostrophes. There is a short writing task at the beginning and end, hopefully intended to show the progress they have made throughout the course. Each week, I consolidated the learning activity with ‘penalty shootouts’, whereby students had to answer a question about the learning correctly to take a penalty either virtually or in real life. As this group was very vocal, they all chose a real life football team to represent and they had to raise their badge to answer a question. I logged the points they won to keep a tally each week and add an element of competition to the learning. There is also a student voice feedback sheet to help monitor the impact of the course. If you use and like, please review! UPDATE 2020 - some of the references in this resource need slightly updating since the players and teams in leagues have changed slightly!

These were originally designed as form time activities for a literacy push on spellings, but could easily be used as starters for lessons, homework, or peer mentoring tasks. The instructions are given with a light touch, but are easily adaptable and all have a consolidating task. They were used in the run up to Christmas, hence the Christmas spellings! OCR GCSE literature scaffolds; poetry, An Insp Calls, Great Expectations, Romeo and Juliet GRADE 4

(0)
This is a resource to structure literature essays for each question and the skills associated with them. They are designed to cover all the AOs for each question too and an associated acronym for each unit is meant to help remind students what they need to cover (another thing to remember!) The questions are all the style of the OCR exam and the units we study at my school are *An Inspector Calls, Great Expectations, Romeo and Juliet and Love and Relationships poetry. I should say that this was designed for very low attaining students and students with EAL issues that really struggle to organise thoughts and shape arguments and essays to a grade 4 standard. It would be stifling for those aiming higher. If you use and like, please review!
