This is a grammar quiz I created for my year 9 groups when I noticed their knowledge of basic grammar and sentence types was lacking. Students can work in teams or on their own (your choice), and answers are provided at the end of the PowerPoint. There are bonus rounds in the middle and at the end, to make things a little fun and allow them to play around with some of the skills they have learned. You may find this useful as an initial skill tester, or to check progress after a grammar unit as I did with my students. This is a resource designed to help students to understand the relationship between dependent and independent clauses and comma usage. It also introduces ideas of complex sentences and subordinating conjunctions. The powerpoint has activities going through it, allowing it to be more engaging to students and allow them to be the ones who start to piece the key ideas together. Notes are given at the bottom of each slide to assist in teacher delivery. This resource should be about a lesson in duration.

A quiz made for my students as a fun way to end the term! The quiz has categories for students to pick from, each containing 10 questions, so it makes it easy for you to complete as many categories as you can in your lesson. Answers are at the end of each category's questions, again to allow for you to quickly tally up scores and save time rather than trundling through the whole thing and running out of time, which is always the main issue with quizzes in the classroom! This should suit KS3 and KS4 students, with a range of questions that should be easier, and a few trickier ones to get them thinking (or guessing)! An introductory PowerPoint into the themes of morality and duality in The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde. It gets students to think about what ideas are compared together (duality) in an exercise that can either be done as a class or individually, and also includes a video to introduce ideas about repression of urges and morality to get students thinking. Good for use as preparation for the new GCSE Literature Specification, or for general study of the text.

This is a hot seating activity for use when studying Romeo and Juliet. Each group has a different extract from the events in the play after Mercutio and Tybalt have been killed. Students in the group will each be given a different character to focus on, with one member of the group working closely with all members as the 'reporter'. They must then think up the questions and answers for a hot seating performance to be shown to the other groups centered around how language is used to present how each character is reacting to what has happened and why. There are task sheets attached for each group to give them prompts about what they can look for. There are roles and characters that can suit different abilities and students with particular targets so this lesson can be used well to differentiate. I also found it useful when groups were performing to give the other groups copies of each extract so that they could annotate and make notes based on the others' performances. This can then easily lead into getting students to individually create essay styled paragraphs on how language is used for a particular character to practice applying the information learned to something they may write in the exam or a subsequent assessment.

A lesson developed for a group after an assessment in which I found that their comments on the effects of language and single word analysis was lacking. It includes a starter task, a reminder of the assessment objective, a modelling task to work on on the board, a task for them, and then a pair and share plenary. Hope it helps!

This is a resource I created as a lesson with a year 9 group exploring poetic terminology. This introduces them to the ideas behind poetic voice and personas, getting them to think initially about what they might mean with some examples, before exploring how to use the devices in a creative task in which students try to discover their own poetic voice. I have also added in a homework task as well based around writing poems as a persona, however you may wish to carry it on into the lesson itself.

This is a lesson I prepared for my group when looking at the poem The Emigrée as part of the AQA Power and Conflict Anthology. I gave two groups each a different interpretation and asked them to prepare to present on how the poem supported their interpretation, thinking about close reading and quotations from the text. We then had a free debate about which interpretation we found most relevant and why. I had quite a small group, so you may wish to adjust the groupings to suit your class size, it may be that you have a few different groups working on interpretation 1 for example, or you may wish to split up the focus of both groups.
