GCSE Science Independent Learning Activities/Lesson Plans

(24)
I developed this resource as an interactive, project based way of revising GCSE Science. The power point is very self explanatory and is curriculum linked. I found that the students that i have used this resource with really enjoyed the Independence it gave them and also gave them the opportunity to access different activities to revise or recap knowledge. This resource can be differentiated or can be expanded on very easily for lower or higher ability groups. I hope you enjoy this resource, Feedback welcomed.

Speed up is kinaesthetic programme to develop fluent handwriting. I use this powerpoint alongside the speed up handbook by Lois Addy. I find that by having this powerpoint it is clear to the students my expectations for that lesson. Also, the powerpoint is very visual to aid those students with Language difficulties and ASD.

I have used and developed this recourse to grab the attention of my students as they are entering the classroom. I usually show them one or two slides then the next lesson another of the brain teasers. I have found this recourse useful as a pre starter and something to help engage and settle the students as they enter the classroom. The power point is colourful and features cartoon characters. This recourse is easily adapted and expanded. Feedback Welcomed :)

Science workbook- exam skills, independent learning & topic knowledge

(5)
I developed this workbook to use with high ability year 9, 10 and 11 in an intervention group to raise their attainment. The idea behind the workbook is to encourage independent learning and to prepare the students for exam questions to build their resilience. Topics covered in the workbook: Cells, tissues and organs Fundamental Ideas Energy transfer by heating The resources is easily adapted and i used basic power points to accompany the workbook to help cover the topic knowledge. The textbooks the workbook refers to is the AQA GCSE Core textbook and Activate 1&2 textbooks. However these text books are not necessary as they are used as a resources for the students to use to research answers/ideas. The end of topic tests and mark schemes are taken from AQA and all credit goes to them.

I used this activity with a group of SEN low ability students to assess their progression. The students really enjoyed the haunted house activity and it also promoted the development of their speech and language skills as they each contributed to the discussion before the writing task. May 2017- updated grid to accompany the picture. Designed to be easy for students to use independently and to be very structured. Feedback welcomed :)

I have used this resource for a few years now and it is really useful when doing spelling tests or doing group work on scientific terminology. This resource is easily adapted and can be easily differentiated. I have also used the list to create word walls and other displays. It is also useful when working with SEND or lower ability students to build up their knowledge and vocabulary. I hope this resource will be as helpful and useful to you as it has been to me. Feedback welcomed :) *I did not create this document, all credit goes to those whom made it.

Grammer activity, worksheet and lesson plan

I use this powerpoint on the interactive white board and the students take turns slotting in the correct grammar. At the end of the powerpoint is a worksheet to summerise the learning and to see if the students understood the lesson. I currently use this resource in a secondary school with a group of children with moderate learning difficulties and i find it useful as it is an active way to learn grammar.

Think, Pair, Share Place mat (Simpsons)

(2)
I created this resource to help my lower ability students. The place mat is very effective as it gives the students more structure when given the task to work in pairs. I have used this with students with SEND and the students really respond to the structure and better quality work is produced. It worked especially well with students who have social, emotional and mental health difficulties as well as students with MLD and Autism as it gives them a clear structure. With this resource you can print it on paper and get the students to write on it and then stick it in their books as evidence of work or use it as a display to prompt students on what they need to do in 'think, pair, share' I have also used this recourse by printing it in A3 and laminating it so the students can write on it with a white board pen the it can be cleaned and used again. The recourse is easily adapted for example I made this with Homer and Marge Simpson characters but it can very easily be changed and more detail can be added or taken away to differentiate for different students. Feedback welcomed :)

I use this high frequency word map with all my students in my intervention groups. I find this resource encourages the students to be more independent. Also the word map has a small image on each letter to enable those students who struggle reading to remember the sound of each letter. The vowels are in green boxes to help the students recognise them.

I made and use this resource with a student who has Autism however I also use this with other students who find it difficult to remain on task. This resource makes it easier for SEND or lower ability students to focus and follow instructions. This can be used in a class by the teacher or by a teaching assistant. I also sometimes laminate this and write instructions on for my SEND pupils to follow. The resource is easily adapted (each one of my students has their name at the top of their task sheet) Feedback welcomed, please comment.

Science activity booklet: topic key words, writing & engagement

(1)
I developed this short activity booklet as a tool to assist with an intervention group that I withdraw from science to work on their vocab. We use the library as a setting for the sessions so I have incorporated that into the activities. The resources main objectives are to get the students to familiarise themselves with some of the topic keywords as well as engage them in science as a subject. For example the story writing activity is designed to get them researching planets, space and aliens and to get their imagination working as to whether they think aliens do exist somewhere in another galaxy. It is also designed to link English and science together, working on the students reading, writing and comprehension skills. The pdf file has a few added worksheets within it. This resource is easily adaptable for lower/ higher ability students. Feedback is welcomed. Thank you *I did not create all of the worksheets in the resources all credit goes to those who made them.
