Versatile. Contains opening sentence, e.g.: "The photoelectric effect is like a drinks machine, a pound coin and a load of pennies because...", then followed by a detailed description of the analogy in plain English, then with questions asking reader to identify the work function, threshold frequency, KE of electrons and photon energy.

I used with teams acting out and explaining analogies to each other with viewers asking presenters to justify the analogy and suggest alternatives or improvements.

A good discussion point. The coconut shy analogy is encouraged by IOP as represents particle nature well. But the drinks machine analogy doesn't work- a drinks machine accepts wave input i.e. a high intensity of pennies will get you a coke. So you would have to be careful to lead the discussion so that this misconception isn't ingrained.
