This resource has been designed to be used as either:

  • A standalone Halloween resource alongside others in this collection, suited for AQA, CCEA, Edexcel and WJEC.
  • A revision lesson for AQA GCSE English Literature covering Jekyll and Hyde.
  • An introductory lesson on themes and settings, using Jekyll and Hyde as the primary text.

In this lesson, students are supported to understand what is meant by themes, how themes can be conveyed through settings and how to analyse the use of a theme in literature.

This uses an extract from Jekyll and Hyde demonstrating the duality of a street in Victorian London. A glossary of terms is included to support vocabulary building. Other texts referred to for demonstrating themes: Romeo and Juliet, Girl, Woman, Other and Goodnight Mr Tom.

Suitable for: Classroom teaching, online teaching, tutoring (1:1 and classes).

Printouts included: Extract with glossary, quote explosion x 2 to support analysis.

Example answers and teacher notes included.
