Make a paper bag luminaria in celebration of Las Posadas. People from Mexico celebrate the Christmas season beginning on December 16th. Each evening for nine nights, people walk through the streets as a group. It is called Las Posadas, which means lodgings. They do this to remember the journey Mary and Joseph took in search of lodging. Each night’s walk ends with a celebration in a different home. The final procession ends at the local church, where the people attend midnight mass. Everywhere in the cities and villages, candles, lanterns, and special lights called luminarias are lit.
