Arranging and Sorting
Key Stage: 1 ★

How many ways can you find to split these houses into groups?

This problem is ideal for children to work on in pairs or small groups as this will encourage them to talk about what they are doing, which is a great assessment opportunity for you. Its open-ended nature is a reason in itself to try it in the classroom. Some pupils may surprise you with their inventiveness!

This resource has comprehensive teachers' notes and resources, linked from the problem page. This includes possible approaches and key questions, as well as possible support and extensions.

An sorting activity from the nrich website which presents children with 9 different houses and asks them to put them into different groups matching one or more of the features. The houses have different heights, have different coloured front doors and roofs and have different numbers and styles of windows. The activity can be completed interactively using the website, or the worksheet can be printed and the houses can be cut out to sort. An open-ended activity which allows KS1 children to make decisions and then to explain and justify them. Children could also extend this activity to draw a different house which fits in their group.
