If your interest has a focus on explorers in Antarctica, this unit will be a useful addition. Just imagine coping with the extremes of the climate in Antarctica and being stranded by pack ice. Then watching your ship literally break apart as you stood on ice floes. Add to this the fact that your location and predicament are not known by the outside world. Then you have the background of Captain Larsen and his crew who reached Paulet Island in 1903 and built the hut to enable them to survive during the winter moths of 1903.This unit has a focus on the ruins of a Hut on Paulet Island. The site is shown by map and photograph. It links with early polar exploration and survival in the hostile environment. Via map students can collect information leading to the building of the hut and find out about the name. This unit links with Unit 5 which deals with the issue of conservation and protection of both natural wildlife and the cultural site of Larsen's Hut.
