These resources are inspired by the METER project, being carried out at the University of Oxford, that is trying to understand what we’re using all that electricity for and whether changes in behaviour might help us tackle the peak demand problem. The UK currently relies heavily on electricity generated by fossil fuel power plants. But in order to cut down on air pollution and meet emission targets their use is being phased out. The big question is: how will we meet demands without them?
In this activity students consider this. They will first interpret data on electricity demand throughout the day before looking at how the output from different energy resources also changes in order to meet the changing demand of the nation. They will then consider the consequences of different actions designed to meet supply with demand as we move into a cleaner, greener future.
