This unit has a focus on the loss of rainforests due to the expansion of oil palm plantations. It raises the debate between commercial development and conservation. There are broader issues that can lead out from this unit - such as ecological deterioration; climate change; carbon issues. This unit suits middle secondary levels but it can also be used for more in -depth studies at senior levels. Questions raised within the pages direct students to think through issues. This unit follows on from foundations set in parts 1-3 of the Rainforest realities of Sabah series. Reasons for the growth of oil palm plantations are given along with gains and losses. The worksheet attachment gives opportunity for debate and research. Venture by photographs into a palm oil plantation. Recognise the economic issues and weight these up against ecosystem modification. This unit leads on to the Unit 5 which deals with issues of conservation and animal rehabilitation. If you are looking for resources about current issues that provide opportunity for discussion and debate, this unit meets that requirement.
