An educational podcast focused on the life and writings of George Orwell (1903-1950), hosted by Dr Nathan Waddell (University of Birmingham). The podcast started as a chapter-by-chapter run-through of Orwell’s most famous novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949), and has since grown to include commentaries on Orwell’s other novels and works of non-fiction. It also features interviews with leading scholars in conversation with the podcast host. Alongside close readings of Nineteen Eighty-Four, subjects covered include the question of Orwell’s voice; destitution and genre; civilization, death, and money; racism and fat-shaming; normality and stickiness; poverty tourism; human-animal semblance; war and confusion; nostalgia and misogyny; and love. Conversations with scholars so far have included such guests as Dr Lisa Mullen (Cambridge) and Professor John Bowen (York).
