Free spelling workload audit and class spelling pattern tracker for KS1 and KS2. See where the time goes around your weekly spelling test, and what to reteach.

What’s inside (4 pages, A4, plus an editable Word version)

  • Spelling workload audit. Estimate the minutes for one ordinary week across eight jobs, from choosing the list to reporting to parents. Tick whether your scheme already covers each job, then decide whether to keep, reduce, share or stop it. Includes a worked example row.
  • Make sense of your numbers. Five reflection questions, starting with how the time around the lesson compares with the lesson itself, plus a “my one change” planner.
  • Class spelling pattern tracker. A grid of pupils against nine common spelling patterns (spelling by sound, vowel digraphs, silent letters, double letters, suffixes, prefixes, homophones, apostrophes, exception words). Tally the pattern behind each mistake after your weekly test, and the busiest columns show what to reteach.
  • Ideas to lighten each job. Practical, common classroom ideas for each of the eight jobs.

How to use it

  1. Pick an ordinary week, not a test-heavy one or a holiday one.
  2. Estimate the minutes for each job. Rough is fine; five minutes is enough.
  3. Answer the questions on page 2 and choose one change to try.
  4. Use the pattern tracker after each weekly test for a few weeks.

Works on its own or in a phase or staff meeting: compare totals with colleagues and see which job you all find heaviest. Your numbers stay private, with nothing to submit.

Suitable for Years 1 to 6. Free to copy and use in your own classroom.
