Tropical Storm Decision Making Game

This is a fun decision making lesson based on Typhoon Haiyan - it would be suitable for KS3 or GCSE groups. Conext: Students had already learnt about the Tropical storms, so this was an interesting way of introducing the case study. Equally it could be a useful tool for consolidating case study knowledge and revision for Year 11 geographer - as being something a bit different and imaginative! Students work in pairs - they are a distaster management team. Ten events happen before during and after the storm. Students have options to pick from . Afterwards, their responses are graded.

I used this resource to recap / consolidate threats to the tropcial rainforest and management strategies. How to play: Students play in groups of 3 - 4 . Each player has an area of rainforest in a grid to manage. Each group will need a die to roll. There are 12 ‘rounds’ . Students have to then each roll a die to determine what event happens to their rainforest As well as luck, students will need to make decision on whether they allow certain activities in their rainforest. This is a fun resource and can easily be adapted to suit your needs. There are review questions on the final few slides.
