The topic also touches on media bias in disaster reporting. The first lesson starts with optional background music to a lively kinaesthetic reading activity in which students find the answers to quiz questions on lesser known facts about the Titanic. This is followed by a pairwork reading activity on a more recent shipping disaster in which many more people lost their lives. The grammar point is clarified in the context of the shipping disasters, while follow-up activities can be used to consolidate understanding, promote correct usage, and practice speaking and writing skills in enjoyable ways.

A set of three 45-minute lessons for Key Stage 3 English which aims to encourage students to read for pleasure and take an interest in grammar. The lessons include colourful Powerpoint slides and provide practice in reading, note-taking and speaking, as well as raising awareness of grammar in use, in particular of the passive voice. Working individually and in pairs, students try to solve a real-life mystery while reading about the famous crime writer Anne Perry and the murderess Juliet Hulme. They learn something of life in Victorian times while considering crime, punishment and rehabilitation. Preparation of comments and questions in pairs gives them the confidence to contribute to plenary sessions. Students learn how to use a corpus website to enhance use of vocabulary and grammar, while the texts reveal natural uses of the passive, encouraging them to notice its use in other subjects and contexts.

Encourage students in Key Stage 3 English to read for pleasure. In these two 45-minute lessons, raise students' awareness of context in literature by considering the time and place of writing and the author's life and opinions. Show them how background pre-reading and trying to predict content makes reading more enjoyable, and helps them understand works which are distant from them in time and/or place. These lessons introduce students to the American author Christopher Morley and his short novel The Haunted Bookshop. Materials are provided for those who wish to follow the lesson by reading it.

Revising for written exams and/or need an enjoyable German lesson? Motivate students to learn and write with a humourous, lesser-known Grimms fairy tale with colourful slides and parallel English text. This lesson meets requirements for Key Stage 3 writing and grammar, but is adaptable to other levels. First focus on reading and guessing meaning from context, then use the story’s sentences as templates to consolidate use of sentence structure & some grammar items. Students are motivated by the humour and the opportunity to be creative. The lesson can be divided into 2 45-minute sessions or used in part as desired.
