This basic Powerpoint is an historical overview of the history of gifted education. It's primary premise is that the giftedness and gifted and talented education students are social constructs that have changed over time. The resource has been used as an introduction to the area for staff without a background in gifted education at the time that GAT classes were introduced in a New England Region school in Australia. Content, photographs and pictures are not referenced.

Hi Emma. Thanks for taking an interest in this presentation. I guess the answer to the question needs to be somewhat convoluted. I am a history teacher with a masters in Gifted & Talented Ed. I am always interested in how things get to be the way they are. This got me thinking about why the delivery of GAT is so different in Aus, USA, UK etc. When I looked at the history of each system it was obvious that each system had varied inherent values and beliefs (as well as funding and political motivations) that spurned the way each set of deliveries developed. I then looked further back to see if GAT delivery existed before the developed of modern countries. Sure enough, there is nothing new under the sun. One good text is Davis & Rimm, Education of the Gifted and Talented (2004). A little dated. The best source is perhaps online sources and links. These are much more up to date. I think the history of GAT ed needs to be explored much more! Hope this helps.
