Politics Reading Unit (6 lessons)

Whole class reading for upper primary that follows the journey of 4 candidates on the campaign trail to become Prime Minister.

Every lesson has 4 short speeches and can be airdropped to iPads or printed and then read independently, in pairs or whole class. Every lesson comes with quickfire questions pertaining to grammar, punctuation etc, comprehension that looks at repetition, anecdotes, contrasting clauses and quotes, and then a more creative task.

Issues discussed: the need for instructions, working with other toys, dangers posed by family pets, toy car speeding and AI.

Having used this with two previous classes, I’ve found it to be an effective way to develop critical thinking and have children engage with topical issues in a fictional world, avoiding any ‘real world’ party politics or bias/affiliation.
