Here is a standalone unit that can be used at many levels and in many different ways. At primary levels you could use this mainly for the information provided in the many photographs. At secondary levels the material can be examined at greater depth. There were many obstacles for those trying to reach the geographic North Pole. Apart from the weather extremes the North Pole lies beneath the Arctic Ocean. Ice floes drift across the area. This settlement, which began as a coal mining settlement, became newsworthy in the 1920's as the starting point for the starting point for the hot air balloon flight over the North Pole. At the end there is the possibility of following the resources through to form a series of leaflets or a larger poster display. The resources of map and photographs have been attached in black and white form as well as colour so that you have the option of which you use to provide hard copies. Teachers will be assisted by prepared resources that interest students and promote learning.
