Sarah Wilkin offers this resource pack to teachers looking for a new way of exploring language varieties and dialects with their classes. Students start by evaluating their own language profile before analysing characteristics of the Yorkshire dialect as used in the war poetry of Rev. Studdert Kennedy (‘Woodbine Willie’). Hardy’s powerful poem ‘The Pity of It’ is also used as a lens by which to develop students’ understanding of how language is connected to (national) identity and heritage.
