At first glance you may think this unit is about burrowing animals but when you investigate further you will find out that it has much greater depth. Sure - it opens with the burrowing situation but as you dig further you discover a significant copper mining history. The story expands from mineral discovery, mining issues and technology into the transplanting of Cornish miners via migration into an area of South Australia that was to be given the title of "Australia's Little Cornwall". Follow the pages and by diagram, map and photographs old and new your students will contact the days when copper mining was the main focus of economic activity and the main source of employment. Find out when and where the copper mining industry thrived and eventually collapsed. This study also reveals why and how the boom towns of the copper mining era had to find other functions to reverse the population declines of the mone and smelter closures of 1923. Recognise how this area has changed its focus from mining to present day recreation, supply towns and the expansion of coastal residential areas mainly for retirees. However, amongst all these changes the towns do conduct a festival every two years which has a focus on its past of mining and Cornish origins. The attachment sheets provide opportunity to gather information and check on the student level of understanding. The Copper Triangle has its origins in the mining industry and, if you visit Moonta during the tourist season (mainly Summer) you can still get on board Ryan's Express, the tourist train that will take you around some of the sites of the Copper Mining days. This unit was initially planned to include 5 pages. As more information was unearthed it expanded into 17. There's plenty here for students to learn.
