This has been used both in Primary and early Secondary levels as an introductory activity for reading and presenting maps. It introduces the 5 basic elements of map reading and uses the description of a cattleman to support a sketch map of Tombstone which is based on the description. Students are asked to look at maps and recognise the importance of the 5 map elements in gaining information. You could use this approach on any basic maps you choose. Following map units will provide maps of increasing detail and more complex keys. This is a starter self-explanatory activity which you can pick up and use. A black and white map is included as an attachment in case you wish to provide individual hard copies for student use. Colour maps are better for interpretation but you may have restrictions on colour copies.
