We must commemorate the feats of the Mars rovers— each derivative, building on the last. This, despite NASA’s history of failures, where the slightest cursory discrepancy in calculations, or nonconformity to protocol, lead to disaster. Each rover landing was circumspectly attended by apprehension, until flight directors could triumphantly articulate: “Success!”

We must honor the accomplishments of the Mars rovers—each a successor, refining the path paved by its forerunners. This, in spite of NASA’s record of setbacks, where the smallest superficial inconsistency in math, or divergence from procedure, had spelled catastrophe. Every rover descent was carefully monitored, colored by unease, until mission control could finally declare: “We did it!”
