This lesson was used in an NQT review lesson and was graded as outstanding. It includes a presentation which is complete with starter activities, a guide through the lesson, interactive timer, lots of images for support, questioning throughout and an outline of the practical activity. The practical was using eggs without shells to model animal cells and were placed in different salt concentrations and mass change measured to show the effects of hyper-, hypo- and iso-tonic solutions. Lesson also includes two sets of assessment including one based on scientific method and evaluation and a knowledge based 6-mark question. Lesson was pitched at a very high ability group but there are hint sheets and other simple ways to differentiate this down to all abilities.

This lesson is designed for the new AQA (9-1) GCSE. It includes a full PowerPoint presentation which goes through diffusion with interactive visuals and then gives examples of diffusion in nature. I combined the lesson with an aerosol demonstration and a potassium permanganate practical but there are lots of different ways to do it including a full investigation if you wanted to. This lesson also incudes a homework activity which includes a 6-mark question about the factors that affect the rate of diffusion and comes with an information sheet containing text and graphs. This homework could be used in class or could easily be adapted into various other activities.
