Whole class activity to revise decimal operations. Covers adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing decimals. Have students work individually or in pairs to answer questions on whiteboards. Have a student pick a category and amount (i.e. Subtracting 200), give them a time limit to answer the questions. If they get it correct they earn the points. Excellent activity to engage students, revise as a whole class and assess student learning. I like to use good examples of working and show them to the class and help correct any misconceptions. The level of difficulty increases with the points earned.

This lesson guides students through how to factorise trinomials using algebra tiles to develop their conceptual understanding. Since using algebra tiles my students have really started to understand how and why we proceed with our algebraic methods. This lesson uses the box method of factorising, which builds on my expanding brackets lessons where the box method is first introduced. it is a nice way to visualise factorising and model with algebra tiles. The lesson starts with greatest common factor trinomials with a co-efficient of =1 trinomials with co-efficient >1 difference of squares I use the same method throughout so there is no need to learn various techniques. I now introduce my classes to completing the square with the visual representation of algebra tiles and they have really started to understand the process behind how we complete the square. I shared this class once a week with another teacher and needed a worksheet that used bar modelling as this is how she taught them to do fractions (which I think is amazing). I found the pupils started to develop a good understanding of what they were doing when they were adding and subtracting fractions when they could see the parts being broken up. I used it with a low/mid-ability class. The worksheet is scaffolded with a few for them to try without boxes at the end.

Whole class game to practice a variety of solving equations questions. A student picks a moving duck from the game board and whole class answers the question on their whiteboards. Points are gained if the get the answer correct. Bonus points are available if a duck is hooked. These slides include a chance to answer a random fact and increase the bonus point value. My classes enjoy getting to choose the ducks and the chance to gain bonus points.

I have used this method to introduce my students to what I call the reverse box method of factorising. They really seem to enjoy and understand factorising quadratics including questions involving a>1, which I don’t teach as a separate topic.
