This lesson guides students through how to factorise trinomials using algebra tiles to develop their conceptual understanding. Since using algebra tiles my students have really started to understand how and why we proceed with our algebraic methods.

This lesson uses the box method of factorising, which builds on my expanding brackets lessons where the box method is first introduced. it is a nice way to visualise factorising and model with algebra tiles.

The lesson starts with

greatest common factor
trinomials with a co-efficient of =1
trinomials with co-efficient >1
difference of squares
I use the same method throughout so there is no need to learn various techniques.
