This lesson will help you understand events in the history of Black Brazil and discover why Black National Consciousness Day was established. You will identify Black Brazilian heroes, and view iconic works by Brazilian artists and understand how art has played a role in the history of Black Brazil.

What Will You Do?

  1. Find out why enslaved Africans arrived in Brazil.
  2. Learn how enslaved Africans fought for freedom by fleeing enslavement and establishing their own communities.
  3. Meet some Brazilian artists and see how their work celebrates Black Brazil.

This lesson can be used in the classroom or given to students to work through independently, with fellow students, or with another adult. The content is accessible to a wide range of ages, but is especially geared toward students aged 14 and over.

This lesson plan is made up of 3 chapters and each chapter takes 45-60 minutes to complete (3 hours in total).
