This is a very simple arrangement of ‘Row Your Boat’. I chose this tune because of its familiarity. It’s possible to sing it with your students for several weeks before introducing this activity. This is currently a free resource, to inspire piano teachers to teach pieces with more than one voice as soon as possible, and also give space to creativity and invention in a pressure free space.

Teaching and practicing canons is a very useful teaching tool for students of all ages. It introduces the concepts of harmony without being overwhelming, and also limits the likelihood that the right hand will become too dominant and loud in their playing. Although it is possible for students to learn how to do this by ear, I find that having that music available is very helpful to support their learning.

I have arranged it in such a way that it can be played by students at all levels, and have included the other versions as a challenge, but also to inspire further creation. Maybe your students will want to add their own articulation or dynamics; or maybe you could adapt the music to meet their needs according to your own expertise. The possibilities are endless.
