This baseline evaluation is a series of questions about musical elements where students have to listen to short clips of music and identify rhythms, pitch, melody, instruments, and changes in music such as dynamics and tempo as well as their knowledge of key music terminology. The question paper is laid out clearly in a progressive way and is supported with a PowerPoint presentation that gives examples of how to answer questions.
The results obtained from doing a baseline evaluation provide invaluable data on students knowledge and understanding. Use of this data can be correlated between other assessments undertaken throughout the Key Stage 3 course, as well as whole school data, instrumental lesson data, and help inform your planning for students learning.
I have also set this paper as part of a Year 10 introduction to the GCSE course exam to see how pupils have progressed and how much of their knowledge and understanding has been consolidated.
This pack contains a question paper in Word and PDF format, an answer paper in PDF format, a PowerPoint Presentation where the audio clips can be played, and also a ZIP file containing all audio clips clearly labelled in WAV format. To set-up make sure that you copy the PowerPoint presentation to the same folder that you have extracted the audio files.
I have also included an extended writing task that can either be set as homework or as an extension task during your lessons. This gives students the opportunity to talk about their music. For this task I have given students a week to research and then write up a draft. Spelling and grammar can then be checked before they write up their neat version. Students who produce a high standard of work are rewarded through whole school reward policy.
