World Book Day / Book Week Activities

World Book Day / Book Week Activities

Here are some whole school activity ideas for book week. My favourite is the book cover quiz. Print the powerpoint, stick up the close ups of book covers on a display somwhere around school and get all classes to visit. They use the provided worksheets to record which book each close up is from (and author if they can). Just check with the answer sheet that you number the pictures of the close ups properly as there are differentiated KS1 and KS2 pictures. Also attached an activity where children discuss an illustration from a book :) Enjoy!

Romeo and Juliet Assembly - Following the Crowd Theme (Shakespeare)

Romeo and Juliet Assembly - Following the Crowd Theme (Shakespeare)

This is a plan for an assembly about why we shouldn’t always follow the crowd, with a focus on William Shakespeare’s play ‘Romeo and Juliet’. There is an PowerPoint included that tells the story of Romeo and Juliet. The plan is easy to follow and requires no resources, so is perfect for using at the last minute! I like leading assemblies that are interactive, engaging and relevant to the children’s lives. So this assembly not only uses the Shakespeare story to introduce the theme, but allows the leader to tell an anecdote linked to a school scenario. You can use the example in the plan or use an anecdote from your own childhood. There is a lot of opportunity for children to think about their own experiences and to feedback. There is also an example prayer/reflection to finish with. (The PowerPoint is also available separately.)

Mother's Day Assembly - 11th March 2018 - Suitable for Key Stages 3, 4 and 5 pupils.

Mother's Day Assembly - 11th March 2018 - Suitable for Key Stages 3, 4 and 5 pupils.

Many of us will be celebrating Mother’s Day by giving cards and gifts. The total spend across the UK is around £1.4 billion; big business. But what is the story behind this special day and why is it that so many of our mums mysteriously have so much in common? This age-appropriate, light-hearted presentation looks at the history of Mothering Sunday and identifies popular ‘mum phrases’. It will have your pupils giggling as they recognise that, ‘my mum says that!’ This pack will save you hours of prep time. It comprises of a 31-slide power-point presentation with detailed presentation notes, a music accompaniment and a prayer for mothers. The presentation can be used in a number of ways; • for a school assembly • as a loop on the school’s visual display system • as part of a lesson.

Shakespeare Week: great set of Shakespeare quotation display cards/teaching resources

Shakespeare Week: great set of Shakespeare quotation display cards/teaching resources

Shakespeare Week is on the way! This pack contains a great set of A4 display pages. Each has a different quotation to make your students think. Under each quotation, which should be big enough for classroom displays, I’ve put a concise summary of what the quotation is about, who said it, and the scene reference. Teaching: you could quickly insert the ‘animation’ function into my PowerPoint to turn this int a great classroom quiz, as the coloured explanatory text is essentially the ‘answer’ -so you get a display and a quiz in on e! The quotations cover the Histories, Tragedies, Comedies and Late Plays. I have chosen more for ‘Macbeth’ and ‘Romeo and Juliet’ to help our GCSE students! Teaching: you could quickly insert the ‘animation’ function into my PowerPoint to turn this int a great classroom quiz. Happy Shakespeare Week, gentles all. Please browse my shop (search under ‘Shakespeare’) for other resources, including a Shakespearean insults tournament lesson and lots of revision packs.
