An introduction into the key characteristics of upland and lowland landscapes in the UK, recently used with Y11. Activities include image interpretation, exam style questions and the use of OS maps of contrasting locations in order to build a deeper understanding of the similarities and differences of these landscapes. Additional OS extracts or maps will be required for the mapping activity.

A series of 4 activities recently used as a decision-making exercise towards the end of a scheme of work on Coasts. Students were arranged in groups of 4, with each member of the group responsible for an individual task. Encourages student collaboration as they need information from various members of their group in order to complete their own task. Also covers a range of skills as each task is tailored towards a particular skill set e.g. statistical analysis, sketch maps, extended writing and graph creation.

A quiz featuring some rather novel geographical questions, including a selection of Dingbats which have proven to be a time-honoured favourite with staff and students alike, promoting some lateral thinking skills (and allowing me to steal Roy Walkers 'say what you see' catchphrase). Easy to amend should you wish to do so, or ready to go as is.

A step-by-step worksheet to allow students to create a flow line map based on air passenger data for the UK and continental Europe.

A brief presentation designed to be used in conjunction with the Edexcel GCSE Geography textbook, introducing the processes involved in the Greenhouse Effect. Includes an extended writing task based on a proportional circle map. The video always seems to go down well with my students!

A series of activities covering the events and impacts of Hurricane Katrina.

Used with a Year 9 group as an activity, but could also be used as an assessment. Includes questions on text based and cartographic sources, as well as the creation of a graph.

Recently used successfully with Year 8 as part of the study of Conflict, this lesson explores both the perception of danger as well as the real risk from terrorism in Europe. Following initial discussion and prediction, students are then directed to complete some simple statistical analysis to test their hypotheses. Students are then able to use graphical skills to produce a choropleth map, exploring spatial distribution. An additional activity relating to global patterns of terrorism could be used as an extension or separate lesson in its own right.

A presentation covering the global and local hydrological systems, together with influences on these systems. Includes example exam questions.

An introductory resource, used recently with Year 7. Focusing on analysis and interpretation first, followed by a dataset in order to allow students to create and then interpret their own climate graphs.

Resources for a full lesson, recently used successfully with Year 8. The idea behind the main task is to create proportional shapes to represent both countries and continents, in order to have a visual aid to appreciate the size and scale of Brazil in comparison to other places. Used as a lesson for an interview which resulted in me getting the job - so can't be that bad!

Data on China's development which can be used to create a series of graphs. Links between population change and GDP can then be made.

I used this with my Year 10 Geographers in order to give them a bit more of an idea of how cities grow in a layered fashion, and it seemed to work quite well. Comparing the settlements created by different groups can be eye-opening, as well as a good way to extend and develop the activity by making references to existing models. Could be used with a variety of groups and in different situations, it was created as an analogue version of Sim City (and any suggestions for improvements would be very welcome!

Used with KS4, but also to good effect with a Y8 class. Data and method provided for constructing a hydrograph along with questions to encourage interpretation and comparison.

A test designed for Y7 entrants in order to ascertain their competency across a basic level of skills. Aimed to match up with the Pearson Progression Scales for Geography, allowing students to access the lowest 2 levels.
