Now here's an oddity - people bathing in a volcanic ash beach hollow on an Antarctic Island. If you are looking for resources on Antarctica, or cold environments, or islands, then this opening unit in a series of 3 titles will be useful. Student interest is gained by looking at the opening photograph on the title page. You can then take them (via photos and description) on excursions of discovery. This is a very special place which fits the title of "cross-curriculum". This island emerged from the sea through a series of volcanic eruptions - so it has landform/geomorphic content. By walking around Whalers Bay students can discover some of the history of settlement. The second title in the series deals with the formation process. The third title on recent eruptions indicates the links with its volcanic origins and supports studies on hazards and disasters (abandonment). This unit can stand alone, but if you want a more complete resource then you can link it with following units. Page 7 indicates that there is a black and white attachment so that a hard copy worksheet can be provided. Despite the environment students will "warm" to this material.
