

I composed this simple piece to support KS3 students in learning how to recognise intervals in music. After discussion and explanation of what intervals are, I use this resource as follows:
- students learn to play the first line (2 bars)
- they then learn to play AND SING the first line, singing the numbers (not the letters) as they go. They should be careful to pitch each note accurately.
- repeat this process for the second and third lines.
The bottom line of music is the most valuable, as this should help students to learn what it feels like and sounds like to sing each of the intervals (2nd, 3rd, 4th etc.).
I then go on to get them to test each other on intervals in pairs, encouraging them to sing up the scale from “1” (which is always C).
