For many farming families in the hills of North Vietnam market days mean early starts - often before dawn - to walk 20-30 kilometres along mountain roads and tracks to reach the Dong Van market.This study has a focus on the market town Dong Van The use of maps, photographs and description allows students to contact the realities and importance of the market place. The selling and buying of items at the market is vital for the survival of farming people. Come and see what happens. Issues are raised by set questions. The market place activity sheet is added as an attachment to reveal the range of goods for sale and to recognise their likely origin source - local, within the town, regional. Remoteness is revealed by environment photos plus the walk to market. The market is a place of social interaction and is visited by ethnic minority groups distinguished by their colourful traditional dress.
